I sat up and pulled my knees in close to my chest. Electricity flared in the air as Luke inhaled.

“You know, Logan, you’re not who I expected you to be,” he said, taking a long thought-filled pause. “I thought the next twelve months were going to be hell living with a California socialite, but you’re pretty amazing. I guess I owe you an apology.”

“So, it’s a good thing that I’m nothing like you expected?” I asked.

“It’s a really, really good thing.”

As I started to smile back he craned his neck to look away from me. His eyes focused. Something black flashed across the road but I was more scared by Luke’s reaction. The warmth had vanished from Luke in a heartbeat. The object stopped moving toward us when it got to an opening between the trees. Even though I could feel Luke’s concern, I leaned forward toward the window, curious. It was a wolf – a really big wolf, staring directly at us with bright green eyes. It was close enough I could see quick breaths escape into the crisp rain-drenched air. I was startled when the engine roared to life. Luke threw the car into reverse, and I nearly slammed into the dash as the sound of gravel scattered everywhere. He quickly jockeyed around and pulled back onto the road heading home. I kept my eyes on the wolf until he was no longer in sight.

“Was that a wolf?” I asked. Everything happened so quickly, I had to be sure.

“Yes,” he spit.

“I’ve never seen a wolf before – that thing was huge.”

Luke immediately turned to look at me with an expression that I couldn’t begin to read.

“What’s going on?” I pressed, puzzled.

When he looked toward the road and didn’t answer, I knew my question needed to be more specific to get results.

“Why are you freaking out? It was just a wolf.” I was worried. He had gone from warm and comforting to moody and distant over such a small thing and I second-guessed how quickly I had fallen for him.

“Because I need to get you home, it’s getting late,” he muttered, failing to control his tone.

“That doesn’t make any sense, Luke. I have no curfew and you flaked as soon as you saw the wolf.”

“Wolves are dangerous.”

“We were in the car,” I countered.

“Doesn’t matter.”

Interview

1. Why did you start writing?

I've fallen in love countless times while reading. I remember being absolutely infatuated with Edward Cullen – who am I kidding, I still am! I would gossip with friends about him for hours, showed up to the midnight showings, and preordered the next Twilight release – I couldn't get enough. That love is nothing compared how deeply in love I've been with Luke Callahan and Logan Keller. But, while Edward's face was on my office desktop background, Luke and Logan were my own creations, ideas I couldn't share quite yet with my friends. I wrote The Violet Hour because I was in love and like any romantic; it was killing me not being able to shout it out to the world.

2. How long have you been writing?

Most people can't remember not being able to read because once you learn how; it changes your entire frame of reference. You never reconnect with that person you were before. Likewise, I don't remember ever not being a writer. It changes the type of human being you are and like breathing; it is always on in the background. I write constantly. Every movie, every conversation, each new book or place I visit, my writer's brain is paying attention, weighing new angles and wrapping words around each experience. Writing is a way of existing. Another way for me to answer this question would be to tell you when I started sharing my writing with others. About six years ago. I began committing words to paper which is now formally known as, The Violet Hour, but have always been, and always will be, writing.

3. Where did you come up with the idea for "The Violet Hour"?

The Violet Hour is a metaphor for not just a coming of age moment, but for anyone on the cusp of something new and dangerous and looking for the inspiration to hold out for one more fighting day. My idea was to capture that unique experience – those rare moments in life where everything that comes after will be defined by that event. Most people describe those moments as fate, as if they have no control. If there was one belief I wanted to share with others, it is that you never have no control, there is no fate... you have the strength to change the course of your own future.

4. Why did you choose to write about werewolves given the numerous supernatural creatures out there?

I don't know if werewolves captured my interest at first as much as wolves. Vampires and zombies go through crazes, but they tend to be more relatable than not. Wolves are something different and they are more than monsters in the dark. Wolves have a capacity for emotional depth but also for chilling violence. I read somewhere that wolves will bury and mourn their dead. Those same wolves will oust a member of their pack; they will run him down for days to physical exhaustion until he dies. There is something very dark and dangerous about an animal that has the capacity to be both deeply affectionate and terrifyingly cold.

5. Do you have any other books in the works that fans could look forward to?

Yes, just like in real life, Logan Keller does not get to just run away with Prince Charming and live happily ever after. She is headed for heartbreak and grim choices in Book #2 for The Violet Hour Series. I won't spoil it, but I will say that I have nearly cried a few times writing this next novel. No matter how much fans and myself may love Luke Callahan, he is, at the end of the day, not a sure bet.

6. Any advice for aspiring authors?

Being an author is about owning that right and I held off sharing my work because I didn't understand that. An author isn't a title bestowed upon you when you publish a book, write a poem, or earn an English degree. No one knocks at your door with your business cards and announces that you have now become an author because you achieved some mark. When you accept that you are an author, that you deserve this, the writing process becomes much easier.

7. Anything else?

I love tacos.

But seriously, though. Tacos are delicious!
