Prologue
The electricity cut so fast, stars erupted in her vision as she adjusted to the sudden darkness. She was going to have some words with her landlord after today. Emory grumbled to herself as she fumbled toward the kitchen drawer, trying to find the flashlight. It was the third time today that the power had gone out. Storms weren’t abnormal with the thick humidity of summer clinging in the air. All Emory Fae had wanted to do today was relax; her hectic workweek and lack of sleep from the night before had put her on edge. Not that she was familiar with a restful night’s sleep. Sighing, she clicked the flashlight on, illuminating her cozy one-bedroom apartment. Books littered every available space. Her old grandfather clock stood in the far corner beside her well-loved sofa. It wasn’t much, but it was home.
Wandering down the hallway, she flipped the metallic panel open, staring at the various switches in front of her. She tried to jiggle the switch back and forth with no results. Lightning streaked across the sky as Emory looked through her kitchen window; dark rolling storm clouds ate up the afternoon haziness. She was going to have to make the best of the situation. Sauntering back into the kitchen, she started rummaging through her junk drawer once again. Finding her barbecue lighter, Emory scouted out every candle she owned until in no time she was bathed in a soft, warm glow. Feeling more hopeful, she put everything away and grabbed her iPod and headphones, sliding them into her jeans’ pocket. Thunder boomed outside, and Emory’s plan quickly formed. Stormy afternoons in a candle-lit ambiance called for a great novel and her cozy sofa.
She turned around and quickly froze. A thick silence pressed into every crevice of the room, making her hair stand on end. Shadows danced in front of her, the flames casting figures on every wall. At twenty-one, she was old enough to recognize when she had a horrible gut feeling about a situation. This was one of those times.
